Dunmore Pineapple & Stirling Castle
The Dunmore Pineapple House is a "folly," an extravagantly ornamental building. It was built as a summer house for the 4th Earl of Dunmore, but did not gain its pineapple until he returned from the Americas after a posting as Governor of the colony of Virginia that ended in July 1776. Despite being sent home early due to the Revolutionary War, the Earl enjoyed American pineapples. Not only did he want to grow them on his farm, but he also embraced the pineapple as a symbol of hospitality. So much so he found someone to design one almost 40 feet high for his home.
Stirling is one of the most important cities in Scotland, and its strategic location has made it a stronghold and target for centuries.
In popular culture, Stirling is most known for the location of the first major battle in the film Braveheart; however, like most of the film the telling of the battle was all wrong. The truth (the battle actually saw the English beaten back as they attempted to cross a narrow bridge), is much more impressive than fiction.
